Fantastic Japanese Showa period four-panel byobu gilt screen depicting the arrival of the Europeans landing on the Japanese shores. Known as Nanban byobu screen meaning "Southern Barbarian Screens". The painting features a large sailing ship with its captain and crew probably from Portugal. Figures unloading cargo onto smaller boats with a deep blue ocean and crashing waves. Intricate ink and natural color pigments over dramatic gold leaf squares. Painted in the Nihonga school style after the famous 17th century work. Signed by artist Mitsu Taka with a seal on the lower left corner of the painting. Very good well-preserved condition with one small tear or loss that is difficult to see in the painted images. From an estate in San Francisco, CA.
