The history of the Campeche chair is quite interesting with the original X base dating back to both Roman and Egyptian times. Campeche style chairs were first produced in America from 1810-1825. This particular chair may have been made in Louisiana for a plantation owner, or possibly a wealthy merchant in New Orleans. Often referred to as a "Planter's Chair," though, from the belief that it was invented as a low, reclined, and airy chair for the planters who owned tea and sugarcane plantations in British Colonial households" which has led us to believe is a more likely possibility for this chair's origin having bought it from an English based source. Appears to be made of mahogany with nail head accent leather seat and what appears to be an inlaid, cross section of a conch shell on the headrest. This is an extremely comfortable chair and one can surely imagine why they were favored by plantation owners while relaxing on their verandas. See less

The one piece green leather seat attached with nailhead accent upholstery tacks is in very good condition as far as having no tears or worn spots. There are, however, multiple scratches to the surface of the leather and one area where the left arm rest attaches to the back frame where the leather is not stretched taught. The finish has all the right signs for being original. There is one place just below the inlaid cross section of a conch shell that has some darkening, which was no doubt due to the owners head resting against it. It is amazingly sturdy with no wiggle whatsoever in any of the joints. Even where the armrests attach to the back of the frame there appear to be cracks or wood grain line separations, but both armrest bases have wooden dowels running through them, and by all appearances are original and were not added later. Both the lines as well as the dowels are pictured. One final condition issue is that one of the finials that are on either side of back frame top has a piece missing from it's round base which is also pictured. less
