Description: Alexander Dux is best known for the images of natural wonders and iconic US scenes that he produced in the … more Alexander Dux is best known for the images of natural wonders and iconic US scenes that he produced in the 1930's for the Federal Works Art Project (WPA). His designs became posters that were widely circulated by the Department of Interior and other US agencies and are collectable today. However, Dux also did oil paintings, mainly landscapes, in the early and mid 1920's. It is unusual to find these works. This signed Dux painting, reminiscent of American Impressionists, captures the atmosphere of snowy hills and dried up fields in winter. The painting was in this deep, ornate frame when we bought it, in Pennsylvania, c. 2010.

Note the name Matthews Gallery on the packing of the painting. At some point it must have been exhibited there. Also, the framing was likely done at the establishment listed on a label affixed to he backing.
