Tissue paper on paper
Edition: Unique, Unframed.
In her abstract drawings, collages and paintings, Fieroza Doorsen brings to life the tensions and harmonies that emerge when structure meets intuition. Her visual language occupies a middle ground between the organic and the geometric, the systematic and the random. The surfaces on which she works, mostly weathered sheets of paper, are tactile and possessive of their own presence. She acts as a medium between her materials and the patterns, systems and shapes they reveal. The resultant compositions feel less like they are supported by surfaces and more like they are inevitable continuations of them.Though abstract, each composition Doorsen develops possesses a confident sense of its own explanation. The work is determined to meet viewers halfway, bringing with it an intrinsic aesthetic meaning while remaining open to contemplation, forming new meanings out of the spectatorial relationship. While interacting with these works one cannot avoid the feeling of flux, that processes are at work. Patterns may emerge, but conclusions are rarely reached. One is simply left with a sense of the ephemeral ways shapes occupy surfaces, forms occupy space, and color organizes the relationships between the visual elements of the world.
Fieroza Doorsen is an English abstract artist who has developed her own personal language with an emphasis on pattern and coloured forms. She lives and works in London. She received a master in printmaking at Chelsea School of Art, London in 1985 and earned a BA in fine art at Ravensbourne College of Art, London in 1984. Fieroza Doorsen uses a wide range of materials: charcoal, ink, pastel, oil, acrylic, gouache, collage to name a few, producing works on paper, oil on canvases and wall based sculptures. Doorsen uses drawing as a way for investigation of ideas and shapes, she plays with curves and lines, geometric mark making and organic forms, colour and monochrome. Her artistic approach has somewhat some reminiscence of Arte Povera using materials such as tissue paper, wax.Predominantly abstract, Doorsens images range from repeated patterns to brightly coloured organic forms. Theses works draw the viewer into a visual language that evokes the formal matrices of classical abstraction that accumulate in the vocabulary of a distinctive and individual language. (curators for the Emergence exhibition, Paris, 2014) Her works are present in public and private collections internationally including the Penguin Collection London and the Deedee Rose Collection in Dallas She has mostly and regularly exhibited in the UK but her work has also been displayed in France, the US and Italy.British Council, Grants to Artists Wilson Stephens & Jones, London, UKEagle Gallery, London, UK
