A Rare turn of the century industrial American factory revolving office chair or stool, fabricated by Tonk mfg Chicago, Ill & New York, NY. Similar to the coveted max Tonk piano stool, the late Victorian "twisted wire" office chair drew inspiration from the popular, highly sought after ice cream parlor and soda fountain chairs of the era. Having four bent steel legs with hooped feet, an ornately decorated cast iron metal central axis or stem, and a fully functional backrest, which is what makes this chair so extremely scarce. The adjustable backrest and swivel screw style seat are crafted from tiger oak, with the seat having the desirable "tiger eye" wood grain pattern and two deeply incised rings around the edge.
It's solid and sturdy enough for daily use and presents splendidly with much of the copper plated finish remaining and nicely aged patina over the whole. The wonderful late 19th - early 20th century piece has hints of Arts and Crafts, industrial, and Art Nouveau styling.
