"Centaur hunting with a bow" - The centaur (in Greek ὁ Κένταυρος, in the plural οἱ Κένταυροι) is a creature of Greek mythology, half man and half horse. Minor legends in which they are probably confused with satyrs make them creatures that are half men and half goats. Their peculiarity was that they were equipped with reason for the human part, but at the same time they were slaves to passions, for the animal side. They exasperate the strengths and weaknesses of the human race: from King Eurytion's uncontrollable lust to Chiron's virtues as an educator. from Greece, the figure of the centaur passed to Roman mythology and medieval bestiaries, becoming a frequent subject in European heraldry. Dante Alighieri places them in Hell as guardians of the circle of the violent, citing the famous Chiron, Nessus and Pholus.
