A Good Quality And Well Matched Pair Of Late 18th Century, Mahogany, Georgian Bedside Night Tables, Or Tray Top Commodes, Having Elegant Shaped Gallery Tops Over Pair Of Well Figured Doors with Attractive Strung Decoration And Converted Pull Out Drawers, Raised On Square Chamfered Legs.
A good example of the much sought after Georgian bedside night table, these have been matched together into a pair at some point in their history, which is extremely common due to a relentless demand over many years for matching tables either side of a bed in combination to the relative scarcity and therefore extremely high price of any true pairs which can be found on the market at any given time.
Happily the differences are relatively minor, with just some ever slightly different mouldings in places, plus a small difference to width. It is indeed quite possible that they were made in the same workshop originally. The cupboard doors offer a solidity and function which some more delicate designs don’t have and they retain a good rich colour and patina.
This particular design continues to prove an extremely popular option for bedside tables due to the relative sturdiness, especially when compared to various other bedside options, the storage they are able to offer and the tray type tops which make it much less likely items perched on the top will get knocked over.
As with all items which we offer for sale these bedside tables have been inspected in our workshops by our highly skilled, trained traditional antique furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish, ensuring that they are ready to be placed immediately into the home.
