Meet éloise and étienne, a pair of antique table lamps meticulously handcrafted from late 19th-century samson vases, circa 1880, originally designed as reproductions of early 18th-century delft faience. These exquisite pieces are adorned with vibrant chinoiserie-inspired motifs, painted in the renowned cashmere palette—a bold combination of cobalt blue, iron-red, and verdant green, enriched by intricate floral medallions and scrolling patterns. The vases echo the grandeur of early delft ceramics while celebrating the artistry of samson & cie, a paris-based workshop renowned for their faithful interpretations of historical designs.
the cashmere palette, which first emerged in the early 1700s, was heavily inspired by chinese famille verte porcelain from the kangxi period (1662–1722). This distinctive color scheme, with its rich hues and densely packed decoration, reflected the baroque fascination with “exoticism” and luxury. The lush patterns and ribbed surfaces of these vases further emphasize their connection to high-quality delftware. Samson’s commitment to replicating such details highlights their dedication to craftsmanship, even as they marked their pieces with subtle identifiers to distinguish them as reproductions.
on the base of each vase, you will find an apocryphal delft mark—conjoined initials “nb” or “mb”—intended to emulate 18th-century factory markings. Next to this is the samson hallmark, a discreet hand-painted x, which was occasionally removed by unscrupulous dealers attempting to pass samson reproductions as original antiques. This pairing of marks underscores the historical intrigue and collector’s appeal of samson pieces, which expertly straddled the line between homage and innovation.
each lamp is crowned with a new, bespoke lampshade, crafted from dupion silk in a warm burnt sienna hue. The lampshades’ textured finish and subtle sheen beautifully complement the vivid colors of the vases, enhancing their decorative appeal. Éloise and étienne are perfectly proportioned for use as statement pieces in a living room or bedroom, bringing a touch of elegance and history to any space. This piece has an attribution mark,
