Wonderful oil on canvas made in France from the 19th century. The work presents a rural scene that, although sober in style, reveals a deep connection with nature, something characteristic of romanticism and the Barbizon School. In the foreground, the cows and human figures, walking slowly through the meadow, convey a sense of country tranquility, while in the background, the women working in the field represent everyday life in its simplest and most natural form. The presence of the house in the distance reinforces the integration of human beings in their rural environment.
The use of soft colors and delicate brushstrokes evoke the tradition of 17th century Dutch landscape painting, while the realistic treatment of the landscape, accompanied by an almost mystical golden atmosphere, refers to German romanticism. Despite the serenity that emanates from the scene, a subtle criticism of the advance of industrialization is also perceived, a recurring sentiment in the artists of the Barbizon School, who sought to recover an idealized vision of nature and rural life against the growing urban boom.
This work, like many others from the school, highlights an admiration for the natural and the humble, rejecting the academic conventions of its time and anticipating the concerns that would later lead to Impressionism. Signed in the lower left corner.
