About the artist: Liliane Klapisch was born in 1933 in Cachan, France. Studied at the Academie Rason in 1951-53. Lived in Morocco for a year in 1958. Klapisch paints nature. But for a painter rooted in the French tradition, who began her career in the heroic days of the modernist abstract of the 1950’s in Paris, “nature” is not a simple word. Her work discloses tension between the abstract and the concrete and “intelligible” between a “tree”, “window” and “house” and their being blobs of paint, at times resembling geometric shapes. The trees, windows or houses in her images sometimes shrivel of their glory, the brushstrokes and crude erasures proclaim themselves and their independence which refuses everything which is beyond the fundamental nakedness of the “tree”.
Klapisch reached tremendous successes and is loved by many due to her beautiful, sensitive and introspective prints, oils and drawings. She had many one-person-shows around the world, in France, Germany and Israel. She recently had a beautiful retrospective exhibition at the Tel Aviv Museum.
Klapisch won the honorary Jerusalem Prize for Painting in 1977 and the Sandberg Prize for Israeli Art given by the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. Her works are in collections of leading museums in Israel. less
