Very beautiful Religious Statue in Polychrome Carved Wood 17th-18th Century Of Saint Francis of Assisi.
His Eyes are made of glass. He is depicted standing, his face and eyes turned towards the sky. He is dressed in a blue homespun robe, tightened at the waist. The stigmata of Christ's side appears on his chest. His hands, missing, were probably open revealing the stigmata of Jesus Christ. Also note the probable absence of feet under the dress. The statue is very expressive. The dimensions are ideal, the Saint is a nice size.
Spain - 17th or 18th century
This work is the work of a disciple of Pedro de Mena. Pedro de Mena is a 17th-century Spanish Baroque sculptor, considered one of the main representatives of the Granada school. His sculptures, Ecce Homo and the Mater Dolorosa, are extremely famous. He himself created a magnificent polychrome wooden sculpture of Saint Francis of Assisi.
Francis of Assisi (in Italian: Francesco d'Assisi), born Giovanni di Pietro Bernardone in 1181 or 1182 in Assisi (present-day Italy) and died on October 3, 1226 in the same city, is an Italian Catholic religious, deacon, mystic and founder of the order of Friars Minor. Knight of Christ and Lady Poverty, Saint Francis is considered one of the greatest saints in the history of the Church: he brought about a decisive change in Christianity, and was quickly nicknamed the Alter Christus, "the 'other Christ', after his death. According to Catholic tradition, he is the first saint in history to receive the stigmata.
