pair of watercolor engravings “le duc de joyeuse” and “le pere joseph” made in 19th century france, with an extraordinary carved wooden frame. These elegant carved and gilded wooden frames in the louis philippe style reflect the sobriety and delicacy characteristic of this period, which flourished during the reign of louis philippe i (1830-1848) in france. The combination of soft and rounded lines, typical of the aesthetics of the time, provides a feeling of harmony and balance compared to the rectangular shape of the piece. The central oval, intended to frame the portraits, is surrounded by an intricate decoration that fuses vegetal and candelieri motifs, and in the space between the oval that houses the portrait and the decoration of the frame itself we find four five-pointed stars, one in each corner, elements that evoke the contained elegance of the rising bourgeoisie of the 19th century. This style will be relegated by the napoleon iii style. Between the two lower stars of both frames a phrase is read which is possibly a reference to those portrayed, in one of them “le duc de joyeuse”, in the other “le pere joseph”.
these frames, which contain portraits of important members of the franciscan order, come from an auction held in a castle in calvados around 1889 by charles de montalembert, a central figure of catholic liberalism in the 19th century. Descended from a noble family of great importance in the history of france, montalembert is particularly known for his work in the history of christianity, especially for his defense of religious freedom and the role of catholicism in society. He was a strong defender of freedom of the press and civil rights, and was active in politics during the revolution of 1848 and in the fight for freedom in the french empire. His lineage, which included connections to the sade family, reflected a unique combination of aristocracy and political commitment. The connection with this prominent politician and thinker gives these pieces not only artistic value, but also a historical charge that highlights the link between the nobility, culture and politics of his time. This object, which transcends its decorative function, carries the essence of a significant family and political legacy.
on the back, handwritten on both, it reads: “acheté à la vente du duc montalembert au château de lafson (calvados) le 24 sbre. 1885”, and in one of them “françois le clerc de s__mblay 1577-1636” is added. These handwritten references give these pieces a strong historical character and great originality.
