One whale, 2 … Read more Early 20th century finely woven Makah or Nuu-chah-nulth Indian basket, easily attributed handmade Native American work . One whale, 2 canoes with 3 and 4 hunters around body, ducks on lid, green and red banding, dark brown knob. The Nuu-chah-nulth inhabit the west coast of Vancouver Island, the Makah, are across the straight in Washington. Both tribes made very similar basketry, using the closed wrapped twining technique, with the inner bark of the red cedar for the foundation warp and stationery weft, and beargrass or slough grass both of which can be dyed. Lovely dark patina, good condition with one split at inner lip. See less
