A color mezzotint engraving portrait of Thomas Gainsborough's 'Mrs. Richard Brinsley Sheridan' signed in pencil by the engraver Alfred J Skrimshire. It resides in its original Edwardian giltwood frame by Braus Galleries of New York and was published in London in 1909.
The original 18th-century painting, created in 1787 by Thomas Gainsborough, is an oil on canvas that is currently housed in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
About the subject: Elizabeth Ann Sheridan (born Elizabeth Ann Linley) was the daughter of English composer Thomas Linley and an accomplished, professional soprano singer of her day who performed in London and Bath until her marriage to Anglo-Irish playwright Richard Brinsley Sheridan, who discouraged her performances. She was also a skilled poet and writer, involved with the Blue Stockings Society, and active in Whig politics. Her beauty and political involvement made her a popular subject of several painters whose work was shown in the National Portrait Gallery, Royal Academy, and Royal Academy of the Arts, including Richard Samuel and Joshua Reynolds. The twists and turns of her life are intriguing, well-documented, and entertaining for anyone who wants a deeper dive into her history.
Mezzotint engraving attributes:
On the lower right side, a diamond logo reads AWSP. To the right of that, a printed caption reads 'London Published 1909 by WM Power Victoria Gallery, Victoria Street Westminister, copyright registered'. Written in pencil below that reads something like 'Engraved in colours...' with a few words we can't make out. Below that is signed 'Alfred J Skrimshire' in pencil by the engraver.
Frame attributes:
The frame is an Edwardian-era, American-made wood and plaster carved giltwood frame from the renowned Braus Galleries of New York City. Braus Galleries ceased business during the Great Depression. Two Braus labels with different addresses remain intact. One reads '717 Fifth Ave,' and the other reads 'N.W. Cor 34th St and 5th Ave' One is directly on the frame, and the other is on the paper backing that would have been placed after framing and sealing the artwork. less
