Exceptional pair of brass Khmer guardian lions. Exceptional craftsmanship and attention to fine detail. The use of the guardian lions date back to the 11th century and would flank the main approaches to the Khmer temples. The lion representing royalty, strength, and courage were adopted as the personal symbol of the Khmer kings. They were believed to ward off evil with Devine and royal protection.
The details are beautiful. Likely from the early 20th century. They are heavy and exude quality. Approximately 20 pounds each. The carvings reflect light beautifully. they are proud lions with their manhood on full display.
