In my family for four generations, this set was originally purchased by my great grandfather in 1910. The set has double pane caning paired with glided mahogany frame. The set included one sofa, a pair of lounge chairs (one of the lounge chairs was dismantled years ago as it was falling apart and needs reassembling by a restorer, if you are interested in including this, please let me know as I have it safely crated in storage and I am happy to include it at a minimal additional cost. This would make the set a 3-piece).
Details:
This is a very good quality antique George V two-piece mahogany bergere cane suite, circa 1900, in excellent condition. Having a rectangular design to the frame of the suite, which includes a matching armchair and a three-seat couch, makes this a superior example of a bergere suite, in terms of provenance, design and quality, compared to other standard sized armchair bergere suites that you see in the market place today.
The arched frame is constructed of top quality solid mahogany, which features a gilded acanthus leaf carvings to the backrest, scroll arms, and the lower section of the frame, including the spherical legs. The suite features perfect condition double panel cane-work to the sides of the arms and single panel cane work to the back. Double panel cane suites are better quality than suites that just feature single cane wall throughout.
The suite has been newly upholstered in top quality hardwearing wool and cotton structured biscuit fabric finished with matching piping and braiding to the chair frame. The cushions are firm but comfortable. The cushion covers feature zips so that the top layers can be removed if they need to be cleaned. The suite features a firm sprung base below, which makes the suite extremely comfortable. The suite seats up to 4 people comfortably. This is a very comfortable suite due to the deep design of the frame.
This suite features a rich brown mahogany colour, lightly gilded with gold.
Condition Report:
This suite is in excellent condition. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges but nothing significant considering its age. The cane work is in excellent condition with no damage or holes. The frame is also solid with no breaks to the arms or back of the suite. The upholstery and cushions were newly upholstered in 2018 with high quality performance fabric that can be removed and washed. Therefore this set is clean and in spotless condition, free from any wear and tear or any marks. There is additional upholstery fabric included in sale.
