An Art Deco cigarette box and cover designed by New Zealand born architect, potter, and designer, Keith Murray (1892-1981) for Josiah Wedgwood and Sons Ltd., Etruria, England. Murray designed this royal commemorative box in earthenware for the planned (and ultimately cancelled) coronation of the King Edward VIII in 1937. The rectangular box features Murray's off-white satin Moonstone glaze with ribbed Art Deco bands around the body. The cover bears King Edward's cipher / monogram surmounted by a crown. Full printed marks on the base: TO COMMEMORATE / THE CORONATION / OF HIS MAJESTY / KING EDWARD VIII / 1937 / WEDGWOOD / MADE IN ENGLAND / Keith Murray.
The box is in very good condition with typical crazing overall and a small area of discoloration on the underside of the cover, measuring 7.75 in. Length x 2.25 height x 3.75 in width. An identical box is part of London’s V&A museum collection. less
