This 15x15 vintage square rug is an exciting new addition to Rug & Kilim’s European rug collection—a masterful Spanish approach to French Aubusson rugs of the Neoclassical flatweave style—handwoven in wool and believed to originate from “The Real Fábrica de Tapices” (Royal Tapestry Factory) in Madrid circa 1960-1970.
On the Design:
Admirers of the craft may appreciate any work from this workshop as an extremely collectible work today, and this rug’s masterful execution of symmetry, scale, and detail are exemplary of the Royal Factory. The colorway is one of the most delicious elements here, where brown, green and blue tones are favored in the medallions and floral patterns atop cream and beige tones. So too is the detailing, not just in the quintessential sense of impressionism of an Aubusson like those in the cartouches of the corners, but in the graceful subtlety of the field’s execution of muted florals.
This honestly brings more attention to the finesse of their execution, and an element dimension that’s exceptional even for this provenance renowned for its works of majesty and detail. It’s also an oversized square rug, with a particularly versatile large size with vast applications in interior design today.
