Born in 1967 in bordeaux, where he lives and creates, laurent durrey has established himself as a major figure in contemporary art since 2005, thanks to his unique technique of lacerated posters and his unique vision. A natural heir to the poster artists of the 50s and 60s, such as jacques villeglé, raymond hains and mimo rotela, he is part of the new realism tradition by giving new life to the fragments of posters that he collects on city walls. From all over the world.
countless, torn, globalist, neglected and vital, the omnipresent poster is laurent durrey's artistic territory, and his intimate source of creation. A singular artist, an enchanter of the streets with a piercing gaze, he knows how to detect walls here and there, a vigilant eye and chance mixed together. To accomplish this art (so well done), this fabulous poster hunter travels endlessly throughout the world. He knows how to create the sky with those left behind by modernity. For him, the poster is an ever-beating heart, the starting point of a dazzling mental adventure.
laurent durrey digs into the fault lines of culture, shows the impasses of meaning, and opens himself to untrodden paths. Passionate, he expresses his anger against the conformisms which crush real life. To exhausted knowledge, to frozen images, it responds with a shattered, plural and telluric non-knowledge. His art cruelly dilutes the rehashed components of the codified image. He plays on the fatigue of meaning and, shaking up the surfaces, speaks endlessly about the end of signs.
but this enchanter brings the signs back to life, reinventing them as he wishes. A high-risk art. Laurent durrey, a prodigious iconoclast, draws on the registers of popular culture as much as on the secret mysteries of art history. He searches the interstices of forgotten truths. The established culture does not resist this transgressive charge, and its profound pictorial, first and latent, finally emerges.
he cuts into the urban expanse, and the disruptive elements of his creations become the framework of his process in action. Faced with the collapse of meaning, knowledge and myths, laurent durrey responds with vibrant and sharp signs, with tasks of an elevated, intense and untamed life. He attacks the void. It oxygenates the city.
