sculpture in white vitrified hard-paste porcelain, depicting a rampant lion with a shield with a white and blue checkerboard decoration, coat of arms of bavaria, signed under the base with a green brand and on the base with a shield engraved by the nymphenburg manufacture, and on the back of the shield with inscribed signature "e. A. Rauch". The sculpture can be dated between 1940 and 1960.
information on the artist and/or manufacturer:
the nymphenburg porcelain manufactory was founded in 1747 in munich by the elector maximilian iii of bavaria. In 1754, francesco antonio bustelli was invited to work as a costume designer and in 1755 there were the first court orders. In 1756 nymphenburg was one of the first manufacturers in the world to paint on porcelain. In 1761 the factory was moved to nymphenburg castle where it is still based today and continues to produce porcelain. The proposed sculpture was created by ernest andreas rauch (1901-1990), a german sculptor who created sculptures in wood, bronze, stone and porcelain, both on his own and in collaboration with various manufacturers including nymphenburg.
useful information for evaluating the object:
still in the last photos, we have also placed the same lion proposed by us, in a very small version however, only 8 centimeters high, a real miniature, estimated at auction with a starting price of €650 from a minor auction house in 2014, price to which auction fees should then be added. Then we placed another one, more similar in size to ours, for which we require 2650 euros. Finally we put a photo of two bronze sculptures by roach, one sold at auction for 2592 euros in 1992 so, considering inflation since then, 2592 euros (plus auction fees) are equivalent today to around 6 or 7 thousand euro. The other sold at auction for 1500 euros plus royalties in 2012. This is to give an idea of the importance of this artist's works.
final thoughts on the object:
this sculpture is particularly valuable and rare because it is the largest lion ever created by ernst andreas rauch, there are many others, especially small ones and some medium ones, but this large one is very rare. The quality of nymphenburg porcelain, then, is beyond question, a very hard, very white porcelain such as only the greatest manufacturers can create. This piece has an attribution mark,
