more
Oil painting on solid wood panel, depicting a marina with mountains, lake or sea, with houses in the distance and sailing boats, signed lower right in red by the artist "A. Hulk". The painting can be dated to the end of the 19th century, between 1860 and 1880. The signature has been slightly erased by the various cleanings that the painting has undergone over time, but still remains clearly visible. High quality painting, all made with the tip of a brush by a painter of considerable artistic talent. The depth of the landscape is superb and the boats and mountains in the distance are beautiful, the sky thick with clouds is majestic.
Information on the artist and/or manufacturer:
Abraham Hulk Senior (1 May 1813 in London – 23 March 1897 in Zevenaar) was an Anglo-Dutch painter, draftsman and lithographer. He initially trained as a portrait painter, but became famous as a marine painter and patriarch of an entire family of Anglo-Dutch artists. His works are exhibited in museums in Amsterdam, Dordrecht, Haarlem and Enschede.
Useful information for evaluating the object:
In the last photos we have put the signature reported on Art Price and the eight highest auction results achieved by Abraham Hulk's works, with maximum peaks of almost €60,000 (to which auction fees of 25-30% must be added). , for paintings very similar to ours, one a little larger than ours, others a little larger and one (the eighth, almost 40,000 euros reached) smaller.
Information relating to the authenticity of the painting:
The painting was photographed under Wood's lamp (see photo), from this analysis it follows that there are no retouchings or restorations and that the signature is coeval with the painting because it is under patina, if it had been added subsequently it would be white and shiny or violaceous, as for touch-ups, which does not happen. Furthermore, the painting was professionally cleaned by us, and the behavior of the pigment under the action of the acetone swab was that of a pigment from the 1800s, very resistant to the action of the solvent. Finally, the solid wood panel on which it is made is thick, dark and very old, on the back there are some wax stamps, which means that the painting belonged to some important collection, furthermore there is a small residue of a cartouche in the bottom right corner, yellowed and dirty. We are therefore talking, in our opinion, about a 100% original work.
