This elegant PZH Gouda vase, likely from the Azalea decor series, circa 1920-1930 (though the full decor name and year marking remain hidden beneath the original Bruggeman & Co. sales tag, which we have preserved), showcases the distinctive artistry of Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland (PZH). The vase’s design draws on Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Asian-inspired aesthetics, with an almost Japanese influence in its design.
The lower portion of the vase is painted in a deep, vivid cobalt blue, transitioning smoothly into a more subdued dress blue midsection, evoking a sense of serene flow. The hand-painted floral motifs, which swirl like fan-shaped blossoms or leaves, are rendered in varying shades of teal, giving the piece depth and movement. These patterns are contrasted by rich, dark wood-like branches, adding a naturalistic element that winds across the vase, anchoring the bold botanical forms.
