Double Headboard in Painted Wood with Shell and Scrolls from the 1950s, handcrafted in fir wood, this antique double headboard is a panel with a soft contoured line, 170 cm high and 180 cm wide, ideal for a double bed, with two side uprights and a perforated carving that enhances the polychrome decoration. This ancient Italian headboard is richly hand-painted with vegetal elements, scrolls that follow the fretwork carving, acanthus leaves that surmount and enclose the central shell. It is the work of a decorator from the mid-1950s who painted this headboard with very warm tones, we find the blue of the central shell, ocher, Naples red, light green, delicate and pastel nuances.
It comes from a private collection in Lombardy and is in good condition, with signs of wear compatible with use. On the back there are holes for hanging the headboard on the wall.
In Greek and Roman myths, shells were a symbol of prosperity, rebirth and indicated the source of fertility. The shell recalls the idea of the maternal womb and is a symbol of love and birth. As an ornamental motif, the shell appears during Mannerism, an ornamental evolution that is linked to that of the Grotesques, subsequently expanded in the Baroque century, especially in France, where this decorative motif is linked to the Roccaille. less
