extraordinary charles iv console in carved wood and gilded with fine gold, made in the 18th century in genoese territory. It presents a voluptuous and light structure, emphasized by its extraordinary cabriole legs, the openwork skirt, and the butter yellow polychrome top. This style combines baroque and rococo influences, reflecting an opulence and sophistication characteristic of the era.
what draws the attention is the profuse carved decoration: an extraordinary figurehead composed of a kind of bulb surrounded by two plant elements, and from which a fleshy rose emerges. This element is repeated on the other two sides of the console. In baroque aesthetics, beauty was sought in organic and fluid forms. It is precisely the large figurehead that develops the main element of the openwork skirt, outlined with seed beads. Furthermore, in the upper area, an elegant frieze has been carved where leaves framed in rockeries follow one another, like a garland. Exquisite cabriole legs, curving outward at the top, adorned with a naturalistic lion figurehead, and topped with a goat's hoof, details characteristic of the italian baroque.
the carlos iv style refers to the artistic and decorative trend that predominated in spain during the reign of charles iv (1788-1808). This style is considered an extension and adaptation of neoclassicism in europe, largely influenced by the louis xvi style in france, with touches of italian influences, especially genoa. less
