The fabric is worn at the base where knees would meet the seat. The backs have wear on the tops where hands would have pulled the chairs out. This set of six French Louis XVIII dining chairs is expertly crafted from walnut and features Os de Mouton bases, complemented by Italian Missoni-style flame stitch upholstery. These elements highlight the artistry and craftsmanship of the 19th century, making them ideal for anyone looking to create a space that exudes European elegance and classical beauty.
The chairs boast an exquisite chapeau de gendarme back frame and traditional Os de Mouton legs, both of which display a rich, aged patina. The distinctive Os de Mouton legs feature a scrolling design that resembles a sheep’s bone, enhancing the chairs’ overall charm. They are supported by cross stretchers, which add durability and stability.
Each chair is handcrafted from solid walnut wood, with the robust construction and warm tones beautifully complementing the elegant scrolling legs. The flame stitch upholstery displays a needlepoint stitch that creates a pattern resembling flames, adding visual interest and character. This decorative style has likely been around since the 13th century, possibly evolving from a tradition introduced by a Hungarian princess who married into the Medici family. The technique combines the jagged point de Hongrie stitch with the traditional straight or "brick" stitch, resulting in the dynamic and varied motif known as flame stitch.
These chairs, although showing signs of wear, exhibit a trendy Missoni style. We have decided to keep them in their original state. You can choose to reupholster them in a more traditional and elegant fabric or keep them as they are for a vintage mid-century modern look. They are in excellent solid structural condition and will remain great chairs for decades to come.
