The craft of carving the hard root knob of a bamboo shoot into decorative finials for furniture is on full display in this late 19th century scorched bamboo corner chair. In this instance the root is carved to resemble Magnolia seed pods. Called a corner chair, its name is something of a misnomer: it’s armless design was originally inspired not to be placed in the corner of a room, but rather so a gentleman wearing a sword – on either side – could sit down without taking it off.
This example in the English Aesthetic Movement is in wonderful 135+ year old condition. Nothing split, missing or broken. Note how the artist flared the bamboo root finals at an angle to prevent accidental damage when the occupant would lean back in the chair. Intricate scorching work showing wavy lines, dots, etc. Light finish wear as shown. Has just the tiniest bit of wobble in the joinery but is suitable for use. Seat measures 15.5" square. 34" high, with a seat height of `8".
