Rich patina and character flaws that are expected and desirable in a true antique and are well represented by photos. Some cracks, shrinkage, wood loss. and chipped paint. Joinery is still tight and overall the piece is structurally solid. The black lacquered sides are probably a latter addition as well as the hardware on the doors. Originally the side door did not feature exterior hardware, and would have been latched from the inside of their backs. This would have given the smaller two side drawers of the interior a secret quality. Speaking of secrets, there Is also evidence of a trap door in the timber that divides the top section from the skirt that provided access the middle drawer below. less

Offered for your consideration and with highest compliments this stunning antique Chinese cabinet. Each of its four doors are embellished with traditional motifs depicting nature. First, is the top panel of a low-relief carved and embossed fan shaped medallion. Next down and most remarkable, are two separate members, the top being open carved fretwork carved with birds and tree branches. Behind the fretting is a free panel decorated in vermilion that though now fixed, would have original been able to slide down in order to provide ventilation. The next section is rectangular and embellished in the same manner as the top one. Last but not least, is the bottom one painted with flora and birds. The doors open to reveal a spacious interior fitted with a shelves and three drawers with bronze hardware. The ample storage theme continues with the lower “skirt” section, and is fitted with three blind drawers again featuring hand painted gilt decorations. Interestingly, the sides of the cabinet are lacquered in black with colorful paintings of flowers and butterflies. These decorations are likely a later addition but nevertheless, are beautifully executed.
This exceptional antique represents the golden age of Asian design and was constructed using traditional methods that have stood the test of time. With proper care it will continue to impress generations to come.
