Exquisite Montparnasse frame, made in the mid-20th century. The Montparnasse frames date back to the beginning of the 20th century when the most bohemian painters settled in this neighborhood of Paris. As they were artists with very little means, they carved the frames themselves from modest pine and left them ungilded. The patinas are all different, with traditional frames being cream or gray. The carving itself is ornate and seeks to recall the Louis XIV and Louis XV styles. This way of making was understood as an extension of art, the frame being something more than just a frame, and soon, they began to be gilded. Many of the painters of the School of Montparnasse and the School of Paris framed their Post-Impressionist and Cubist paintings with the Montparnasse frame. The result is a decorative and very special frame.
