A “garlic-head vase” is a traditional type of ceramic vessel known for its distinctive shape, where the neck of the vase resembles a garlic bulb, hence the name. These vases were common in Chinese history, especially during the Song, Yuan, and Ming dynasties. They were typically used to hold wine or other liquids and were sometimes simply decorative.
During the Song dynasty, the garlic-head vase was an innovative form in ceramic production, particularly from renowned kilns such as those in Jingdezhen. The vase has a short, thick neck and a bulbous, garlic-shaped mouth, while the body is usually rounded and elegant. This design not only had aesthetic appeal but also helped minimize liquid evaporation.
The garlic-head vase continued to be produced and refined in the Yuan and Ming dynasties, appearing in blue-and-white porcelain and other painted ceramics, becoming a classic type of Chinese ceramic.
