Les Argonautes, a ceramic workshop founded by Isabelle Ferlay and Frédérique Bourguet in Vallauris, played a key role in the town's golden age of ceramics. Inspired by Greek mythology, the name evokes heroic adventurers aboard the legendary ship Argo.
Isabelle trained in painting at the Beaux-Arts in Lyon and Marseille before studying pottery at École Fontcarrade in Montpellier. Frédérique studied at the Beaux-Arts in Montpellier and interned at Sèvres. After opening a studio in Paris, they moved to Vallauris in 1953, establishing Les Argonautes. Initially focused on utilitarian pottery, their work shifted to decorative plaques, sculptures, and religious figures after Isabelle suffered manganese poisoning in 1955. Over time, they explored various materials, from Vallauris clay to ash-glazed stoneware.
Les Argonautes exhibited widely, participating in events like the 1955 Cannes International Exhibition of Ceramics and the 1970 Vallauris Biennale. Their work was also sold in French gift shops through the Salons of the Ateliers d’Art de Paris. The studio nurtured future ceramists, including Jacques Innocenti and François Raty, fostering a collaborative artistic atmosphere.
The workshop closed in 1997 after Frédérique's passing, but their legacy endures, especially through their distinctive mirrors. less
