Titled Head, this print depicts an abstracted head composed of tribal-inspired shapes in black and orange. Signed to the lower right, the print is titled to the lower left and displayed in a wooden frame and a light tan mat.

Born in Navasota, Texas, Blackshear began studying art as a teenager. She earned an undergraduate degree from Baylor University and went on to study a year the Art Students League in New York. After spending several years in design jobs and teaching, as well as traveling in Europe and Mexico, Blackshear began studying at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1924. While there, she studied under Charles Fabens Kelley, John Norton, and Helen Gardner, author of Art Through the Ages. Blackshear became close friends and eventually was teaching art history under the supervision of Gardner. Both Gardner and Blackshear emphasized the importance of studying non-Western art, which was also something that greatly influenced Blackshear's artistic style. Her work is in the permanent collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, among others. See less
