Having original brass bound decoration to corners and five drawers retaining original flush fitted brass handles, flanked by original brass carrying handles to sides. Raised on original turned feet. As the name suggests, Military Campaign Chests were originally made for use by senior members of the armed forces and therefore their design was such that they were easy to transport from location to location, without getting damaged, often at short notice. Features which are specific to this purpose are things such as the two part construction for ease of movement, the flush fitting brass handles to avoid them snagging on things and the brass bound decoration to try and avoid the corners of the item getting overly bumped and bruised. This particular military chest is a very nice example of its type, a good size, with large useful drawers which still function beautifully and of course being constructed from camphor wood, as opposed to what would have been a cheaper material like teak or similar. An additional bonus of the use of camphor wood in its construction is the fact that camphor wood gives off a most pleasant aroma indeed and is well known for its use in the keeping away of moths or other similar bug type insects. As with all items we offer for sale this campaign chest has been attended to in our workshops by our highly trained, skilled, antique furniture restorers, where it received a natural wax polish ensuring that it is fit for immediate placement within the home or office. Circa 1850. Height 43in. Width 40in. Depth 19in. less
