Lovely cast detail frames the face, with a … more A decorative and versatile brass carriage clock, with inset enamel face numerals. Lovely cast detail frames the face, with a crownlike handle on top and little turned brass feet beneath. Sides have glass panels. Ca. late 19th century, bears an engraved inscription: “Wixson June 9, 1886” on the back. Carriage clocks originated in France in the early 19th century, as portable traveling clocks, free of a pendulum movement that would have prevented them from working as they were jostled about. Good antique condition, brass is bright and appears to be lacquered, so it will not tarnish. Light wear to the surface, mainly to the back panel. The works have been replaced with a modern AA battery powered movement which accurately keeps time.
