She was born Susan Margaret Pomery and brought up in Falmouth in Cornwall. Her father was a talented amateur artist and she quickly absorbed the principles of perspective, light and perspective. Although she wanted to become an artist she initially trained as a nurse. She nevertheless continued to paint for her own enjoyment and sold her works to friends and colleagues. When her own children were at school she joined local art classes and studied life drawing. She did not however feel able to study full time until her daughters went to university.
As a mature student Pomery Wilks undertook a sculpture degree course at Carmarthen College of Art and Design. After graduating she took up painting seriously and has found commercial success. Her artwork, in which she excels in a number of media, reflect her understanding of three-dimensional form and texture. It has been said that her paintings can be read like braille. The predominant subject of her works is Pembrokeshire, whether this is its coastline, or its cottages and farms, or the communities and animals that live there.
Sue Pomery Wilks has produced works for a number of exhibitions in south Wales centred around the Tenby area.
This original charcoal and pastel on paper artwork depicts a flock of sheep. They are portrayed not as individual animals but as a communal entity, almost moving and breathing as one. There is a wonderful texture about the piece, and the bodies of the sheep almost merge into the hills beyond. The application of pastel is highly effective and skilled. This piece has an attribution mark,
