The story of the making of this book goes back more than thirteen years. While I was working as a freelance photographer in the south of France, I photographed Picasso with his children at a ceramics exhibition in Vallauris. He liked the pictures when they were shown to him later, and he agreed to my photographing him at work.
My first photographic session with Picasso in his quiet pottery workshop was difficult; I feared that my movements as I photographed him from various angles might disturb him. PIcasso was absorbed in his work, however, and seemed not to notice me. It came as a tremendous relief and encouragement to me afterwards when Picasso remarked to a friend, "Lui, il ne me dérange pas" (This man does not distract me), for it meant that I could photographing him.
Picasso allowed me to visit him regularly from then on. I pictured him at many different times and in many different places as he worked at painting, drawing, or sculpting or was relaxing with family and friends. Out of these many visits came the idea for a book, and it was Picasso himself who suggested that my photographic notebook might make an interesting document.
Nothing was ever arranged specially for picture taking. The photographs mirror situations as they developed and in whatever light was available---sometimes the hard, bright, contrasty Mediterranean sunshine, often only the glare of a hanging electric-light bulb; in other words, under Picasso's normal working conditions. I could do as I liked as long as Picasso could do as he liked, and this usually meant Picasso carrying on with his work. For ultimately Picasso's life is ruled by one passion--work. Even when he is not actually painting, he is absorbed by his art, to the exclusion of all else, and preoccupied with extracting as much as he can from the world and putting it on canvas.
In this pictorial chronicle of Picasso at work and at play, the reader can perhaps catch the mood and atmosphere in which the outstanding artist of this agelives and creates. It aims to show how he is inspired by the everyday things and happenings around him, by the homes he lives in and by his wife, his children, his friends and his pet animals, how he works and why sometimes he destorys what does not please him. This book does not try to explain the genius of Picasso, but it may help to form a definite idea of the kind of man he is and how he explores the man facets of art by constant experiment with forms, materials and colours. - Edward Quinn
