In the cultures of Ife and Benin, the leopard is considered the king of animals, a symbol of courage, strength and authority. The kings (Oba) of Benin often used the image of the leopard to represent their divine power and royal status. Artisans from Ife and Benin used an advanced lost wax casting technique to create these sculptures, which made it possible to achieve very precise details and a smooth finish. See less
