Set of two 19th century French Neo-Renaissance carved curtain rod covers made of oak wood in the 19th century. Traditionally used as cornices or so-called "French return bars", these valances were attached to the wall above the windows. Curtains or special fabric were then attached to the valance, covering several inches in front of the glass. In the mid-18th century, window coverings were a luxury reserved for the nobility and upper class. However, as the 19th century progressed and the middle class grew in size and influence, window decorations became increasingly popular. A testament to the era, this pair of finely carved oak valances retains its functionality and can still be used as intended. Everything was cleaned and preserved several times with hard ecological oil.
