Charming Japanese print titled “Peonies in Yotsume-Honjo” by the well-known Japanese artist Ogata Gekkō, one of the best exponents of ukiyo-e during the Meiji era (1868 - 1912).
We are presented with a rural scene in which three female figures appear tending to some peonies. In the background you can see a simple wooded landscape and some typical peasant houses. In the foreground we find two women, one is crouched holding a pot with a peony while another better dressed woman looks at her. In the background we see a woman taking care of as many peony plants.
A little more about Ukiyo-e:
Ukiyo-e is a genre of Japanese art that flourished between the 17th and 19th centuries. It is mainly characterized by its wood engravings, although it also includes paintings. The term "ukiyo-e" translates as "images of the floating world," and reflects the urban life and ephemeral pleasures of Edo-era Japan.
Ukiyo-e works cover a wide range of subjects, from landscapes and scenes of everyday life to portraits of kabuki actors and courtesans. Famous artists such as Hokusai and Hiroshige are known for their iconic landscape series, such as "The Great Wave off Kanagawa" and "Fifty-Three Stations of Tōkaidō."
About Ogata Gekkō:
Ogata Gekkō (1859-1920) was a prominent Japanese artist known for his woodblock prints and paintings in the ukiyo-e style. He was born Nakagami Masanosuke in Edo (present-day Tokyo) and was self-taught in the art. His career began decorating porcelain and rickshaws, and designing brochures for pleasure quarters.
Gekkō gained recognition both nationally and internationally, being one of the first Japanese artists to gain a global audience. His works cover a variety of subjects, including historical and mythological scenes, as well as landscapes and portraits. Among his best-known series are "Gekkō Zuihitsu" (Essays of Gekkō) and "Fuji hyakkei" (One Hundred Views of Mount Fuji).
In addition to his success at international exhibitions, such as the Chicago World's Fair in 1893 and the Paris World's Fair in 1900, Gekkō was also recognized in Japan, where Emperor Meiji purchased one of his paintings.
