Anthony Morris is a British artist who works in watercolour, oils and pastel. He is well known and well regarded for his landscapes, his architectural pieces and striking academic portraits. His work is always based on sound draftsmanship.
Morris was born in Oxford in 1938 and studied at the Oxford School of Art. He then graduated to the Royal Academy Schools in 1961, where he spent three years under the guidance of Peter Greenham. He won two prestigious scholarships. He has been an active member of The New English Arts Club since 1994 and the Royal Society of Portrait Painters since 1971.
Morris has regularly exhibited his work at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions since 1960. He was invited by invitation at the Royal Academy Bicentennial Exhibition in 1968. Much of his work is currently held in private collections, but his portraits can be found in the Bodleian Library, Oxford and the Open University. His landscapes are at the Royal Academy and Mall Galleries, London. In 2016 Morris contributed to the Cecil Sharp House Retrospective in London, a group show which featured a selection of works from their permanent collections. Morris also enjoyed success with a solo show in Vermont, USA, in 1992.
Anthony Morris lives and works in Talyllyn, Brecon, Powys, where he is chiefly engaged in private commission work.
This original oil on board depicts Llangynidr bridge, also known as Coed-yr-Ynys Bridge, which crosses the River Usk to the north of Llangynidr in Powys, Wales. The stone bridge dates from approximately 1700 and is thought by many to be the oldest bridge on the River Usk. The view from the riverbank shows the three stone arches with the river rushing through; the lack of foliage on the trees, the cool colours and the flow of the river all suggest that this is a winter scene.
