Handmade in wool and originating from Portugal circa 1950-1960, this 14x15 vintage needlepoint is a rare octagonal rug—a collectible and exciting new curation from Rug & Kilim’s European rug collection.
On the Design:
The border patterns are called “Vitruvian scrolls”—meandering patterns inspired by waves, sometimes thought as the curvaceous version of the greek key border in traditional rugs. Meanwhile the field is a more modern design—a repeat geometric pattern in green, orange, and cream white tones that creates an almost cubist, 3D effect that’s truly special. That look of dimensionality is almost one of a kind—difficult to achieve in contemporary rugs, and all-the-more rare and collectible to see in a vintage rug. This most likely speaks to this piece as the work of a special workshop, artist, or atelier of this period, though we can only guess at the rest of its history.
Condition:
This mid-century Portuguese needlepoint rug further enjoys good condition for its age and origin.
