Circa Approx 1870s. … Read more This is an Outstanding Example of a Authentic Antique American Stoneware 2 Gallon Storage Jar - Crock. Circa Approx 1870s. It has a Large and Very Unusual Hand Decorated Striking Blue Stylized Floral Sprig Design. It has Applied "Ears" - Carry Handles and It is Embossed with the Number "2" Denoting its Two Gallon Storage Capacity. It is Also Embossed - Signed with The Documented New York State Maker "CORTLAND". It is in Very Good Original Condition - Displays Beautifully!. It is Strong and Sound with No Cracks - No Repairs. The Classic Salt Glazed Exterior Varies in Colors Between Sand and Greige. The Interior Glaze is Done in a Dark Coffee Brown Color. Minor Age and Use Related Imperfections Noted - It has a Chip on the Front of 1 Handle as well a an Assortment of Chips at the Top Rim Outer and Inner Perimeter Areas. It has a few Kiln Flaws - Under glaze Surface Shrinkage Cracks where the Handles are Joined to the Body but These Would Have Occurred in the Making - Kiln Firing Process. Note Also that There is a Round Patch of Brown Glaze Loss on the Interior Center Bottom Area that Appears to have Occurred in the Making - See Photograph. Kiln Flaws Such as These are Quite Common in These Types of Stoneware Items as They were Produced in Batches with Multiple Other Pieces at at The Same Time in a Large Size Kilns .
