Description: A traditional small hand-made antique Chinese octagonal-shaped wedding basket with a beautifully bent and intricately-carved elm wood handle and brass … more A traditional small hand-made antique Chinese octagonal-shaped wedding basket with a beautifully bent and intricately-carved elm wood handle and brass closure. The basket, which has a wooden bottom, is made of hand-woven and split bamboo and willow fibers in two layers to provide strength and rigidity. The outer layer is woven in a traditional geometric design.   Wedding rituals have a long history in ancient China—the most significant custom being the presentation of gifts. This basket opens to reveal three stacked trays. The gifts they carried represented the couple’s engagement, the groom’s promises to the bride’s family and the acceptance of the bride and groom into each other’s family.
