Charming Late 18th Century French Neoclassical Directoire Chair. Made from cherry with a contoured back over a tole peinte or lacca contrafatta panels showcasing an old landcape / temple cityspace scene. Lacca Contrafatta was a popular form of decoration that sprang up in Venice c.1750. It used prints, cut and pasted on to armoires, cabinets and chests, then painted, gilded and finished with clear varnish. The chair has a rush seat and squared legs connected by stretchers.
