This elegant painting table was constructed over four centuries ago in the late Ming dynasty by an artisan from China's Hunan province. With its broad surface ideal for contemplating scrolls and paintings, the table likely once resided in a scholar's studio, specially selected for its refined proportions. Exemplifying Ming-dynasty restraint, the table has clean, austere lines with simple "horse-shoulder" form legs and is largely without decoration to showcase the richly textured elmwood grain.
