Exceptional engraving made by the engraver Jacques-Joseph Coiny, following Louis-François Lejeune's painting of the Battle of Marengo (1800). Louis-François Lejeune was a French general, painter and lithographer, veteran of the Napoleonic Wars. He took part in numerous Napoleonic campaigns, which he turned into motifs for his work. In the lower area, the coat of arms of the First French Empire appears.
It represents in detail the battle that took place on June 14, 1800 in Marengo, northern Italy, in which Napoleon Bonaparte and the French army of the Republic defeated the Austrian Habsburg army under the command of Marshal field Peter Karl Ott von Batorkez. The battle was part of the Second Coalition, in which several European powers, including Austria, Russia and Great Britain, united to confront France, which was under the leadership of Napoleon Bonaparte.
Marengo was Napoleon's great victory in Italy and the first in his race for domination of Europe. After taking power through a coup d'état, he crossed the Alps to confront Austria in Italy. Just six months earlier, the Corsican soldier had carried out a coup d'état and had become first consul. Upon returning victorious, he obtained unprecedented popularity and was able to focus on the internal reforms of France, something that was possible thanks to the peace that he signed with Austria through the Treaty of Lunéville of January 1801, and which lasted until 1804, when, now Crowned emperor, he launched his great campaigns of conquest in Europe. Ultimately, the Battle of Marengo was a key triumph for Napoleon, solidifying his military reputation and helping to consolidate French rule in Italy.
