additional information:
this ensemble of seating furniture was designed by prof. Josef hoffmann, the leading architect and designer of viennese modernism. The models a811 and a811/f, manufactured by the renowned thonet brothers, show hoffmann's characteristic combination of functionality and stylistic rigor. The use of bentwood and viennese wickerwork combines traditional craftsmanship with the clear design language of modernity.
the furniture is in its original condition, including the original paintwork and viennese cane. They show significant signs of age-related wear, underlining their authenticity and historical significance.
they were used, among other things, in hoffmann's house number 10 in the vienna werkbundsiedlung on veitingergasse in 1932. Hoffmann designed two different house types that are arranged in mirror images so that the two outer and inner houses correspond.
house no. 10 is one of the smaller houses (66 m² built-up area). It is accessed through a central vestibule and, like all houses in the series, offers a spacious roof terrace for sunbathing. The furniture in house number 10 was designed by wilhelm jonasch and wolko gartenberg. In contrast to the larger houses (no. 8 and no. 11), which have been more lavishly furnished, house no. 10 reflects a cleaner and more functional design, tailored to the smaller proportions of the house.
