The top of the piece is decorated with a painted landscape & Gothic church, incorporating mother of pearl to create a whimsical scene. The papier mâché inlay technique used throughout this treasure box was a European innovation inspired by a desire to recreate lacquerware imported from China during the early 19th century. A stunning accessory for the home, this wonderfully ornate box is perfect as a decorative jewelry box. The original lock with keys for the top compartment is still operable.
