After attending art school in London, Zadkine settled in Paris around 1910. There he became part of the Cubist movement. In 1951 he won the prize for sculpture at the Venice Biennale and had a notable influence on contemporary sculptors after the Second World War.
The work in question seems to reflect the artist's interest in the deconstruction and stylization of the figure, also characterized by bright and intense colours. Small-scale works like this were often created as preparatory studies or as spontaneous representations to try out combinations of colors, shapes and materials.
The work was created in 1933 in Paris measuring 17x22 cm. The technique is mixed: tempera, oil and ink paper. It has the signature at the bottom left, “O.Z Atelier Zadkine” and the date and place of creation at the bottom right, “Paris 1933”. Furthermore, the work is provided with a passepartout with total measurements of 19.5x26.5 cm.
The state of conservation is good.
