"Palisades" is an abstract expressionist oil painting on canvas by Monica Shulman. The color palette consists of bold shades of blue, red, pink and turquoise contrasted by calming white tones. Lively, sculptural brushwork and marks brings depth, energy and movement to the painting.
Monica's paintings explore overlapping themes of identity, memory and elements of nature and this painting explores all three. Monica borrowed the title from the view outside her bedroom window overlooking the Palisades and the Hudson River at first light. The sky is still dark in the early hours with the moon reflecting over the Hudson but as the sun is rising you can see its early morning glow on the face of the mountains and cliffs. Living on the Hudson River and having a view of the majestic Palisades from her studio each day is an amazing source of inspiration for Monica as she explores these memories and moments through her artwork.
Monica Shulman is a New York-based artist who tells stories through her brand of gestural abstraction. Her work is rooted in the traditions of abstract expressionism and she describes her world as colorful and rhythmic. Monica's paintings reflect an evolving universe where communication is less concrete. She is greatly inspired by the colors, textures and light in nature and especially the area around the Hudson Valley were her studio is located just on the banks of the Hudson River.
Monica has been featured in various publications including Popular Photography, Create magazine, and the Huffington Post. In 2019 she was named "Best Artist" in Westchester by Westchester magazine. Her work has been shown at the American Academy of Arts and Letters in New York City, Photo LA, Art Market Hamptons, PULSE Art Fair, and the New York Mercantile Exchange, among others. Monica has exhibited her work widely across the United States, Canada, Europe, and South America. She is a member of the National Association of Women Artists. less
