Extraordinary carving of crucified Christ, made in the 18th century. The work presents an outstanding quality, in terms of the anatomical study and the facial expression, of the first order, the pathos, links significantly with the Andalusian school. The polychrome accentuates the overwhelming crucified figure, as well as his still alive and suffering state, with a profusion of small wounds from which streams of blood come out. All this strengthens the sculptural ideals of Spanish baroque imagery, granting the peculiarity in the racial features of the representation, in the slanted eyes. In addition, the face houses the typical baroque expressive resources, in the case of bright eyes created with vitreous paste. The top quality silver pieces, original from the period, stand out, decorating the ends of the cross and the upper "INRI" cartouche.
Work probably brought from Philippine lands by Spanish religious assigned there in the 18th century. Historical factors, such as the English plundering of Manila in 1762, the Spanish-Philippine War and the Second World War, as well as environmental factors, humidity and insects, led to the bringing of a multitude of carvings to Spain. This also explains why artistic collections of greater importance than those existing in the archipelago itself survive today outside the Philippines. Perhaps made in a workshop created in the Philippines during the evangelizing missions of the Augustinians.
